gated community

This summer. . .

we turned our farm into a gated community.

Unlike most gated communities that are built to keep the riff raff out. . .

we built ours to keep the . . .well . . . the younger. ..more ambitious .. .in.

We're not completely gated. . .

we just blocked some of the paths. . .

since we find that our eyes in the back of our heads. . .

are growing weaker.

Essentially. . .

it means nothing.

They just walk around the long way. . .

and we follow.

There are times though when . . .we run. .

and they follow.

If we are so blessed that they choose to follow in our paths. .

may the paths we lead them in . . .

be wise. . .

honest . . .

kind. . .

and

God honoring.

Oh Lord Jesus. . .help me to remember that what I say. .

and what I do. . .

matters.

on Robson

When we go to Vancouver on a date. . .

it is mostly the same thing . . .every time.

We tried a new parking spot this time. .

and that is about as much as we ventured into the unknown.

Mostly. . .

we like to sit and drink an Americano. . .have a molasses cookie. .

go for lunch sitting on a patio if the weather is nice. .

( you can see where we ate in the bottom right hand corner picture. . up on the roof)

and walk around the block a few blocks.

We check out our favorite book store. .

our favorite clothing stores.

There is the store in the bottom right hand corner picture. .

( you know you can click on the collage to have a better look .. right?)

In that store. . .I look through all the racks. . .fuss about the prices and usually buy nothing. . .

but I go in it every time.

The bottom left hand corner picture is the view from their third story window. . .

where my good man watches whilst he waits.

I checked out the new cosmetic store. . .

and wondered where I would even begin.

It is always fun to look though . ..and that still costs nothing.

Around dinner time. . .we're usually done.

We'll generally stop for dinner on the way home.

It's good to go even if neither of us has the energy to come up with something new and exciting

It is all about the date. . .not the date activities.

I'm off to get my roots checked .. .and it's not a moment too soon.

All for now. .

something fixable is good

Kanneloni Macaroni and Oma having a chat.

Yesterday was a good day. . .

a very good day.

My mom by love. . .Pauline. . .(you've met her over Hot Dog Relish and Potato Salad over at Mennonite girls can cook).. . . had tests. Today I am featuring her recipe for . . .

Chocolate Zucchini Bread over at Mennonite Girls Can Cook.

It turns out that Oma. . .

has an ulcer.

I was so happy.

On days when people are getting news they dreaded to hear. . . .

our family was relieved.

Something fixable. . . is good.

I made Apricot Platz. . . it may not have been a cure .. .

but it was a start and it couldn't hurt either.

Giving Thanks!!

seeing a glimpse of the plans

Several weeks ago we visited Rockridge Canyon.
The sign said. . .visitors report to the office. . .and so we did.
The girl at the desk welcomed us. . .we stood there. . .
I said. . ."the sign said to report in. . .we just want to have a look around".
She said. . ."oh wonderful. . .I'll buzz someone from upstairs to show you around."
A few minutes later we were introduced to a really nice fellow that gave us the "coles notes". . .on who comes to Rockridge Canyon and how the resort came to be and so on.

From what I understand. . .

It is a facility built primarily for kids. . .to come and be with adults who care about them .

Each day is filled with tons of activities. . .

times of learning about God. . .

great food. . .

and good clean fun.

The summer months are set aside for high school aged kids. . .

and the rest of the year is available for church group retreats.

I wanted to be there. . .

I can see myself being there. .

. . . .specifically here.

Don't you just wonder sometimes. . .

what plans God still has for you life?

What good am I anyway?

On days that I feel quite unlovely. . .

I hold on the the promise in God word.

"For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord.

They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope."

love those berries

So anyways. . .

The blackberries are peaking in our part of the world.

Yesterday we went to the patch in our back forty five. . .and looked for the biggest and the best of the season.

Blackberries are the best. . .

just out of reach.

The biggest. .

and the juiciest can be seen but not easily accessed so we do ..

whatever we need to do to get those elusive fat and juicy berries.

So . .I said. . ."hold on to the back of my pants. . .I'm reaching in"

He held. ..and then thought I needed a bit more slack. . .

and I lost my balance. .

and wore the brambles all the way down.

Now. . .

this picture was taken after I went to the house and the clotting began.

I said. . ."we need to go back for picture. . .you realize"

Yes. . .he had figured that in.

The rest of the berries were picked. . .

with me pointing ..

and standing on the bottom of the ladder offering support.

All fow now. . .

surprise in a bag

It seems that my gardens have gotten a bit out of control. . .
so I hired out.
I said. . ."hey there lad. . .I'll swap you cookies for hoeing"
He said. . ."uh huh"
Whilst he worked his little hoe. . .
I hung about. . .asking him if he was blog shy .. .
He said. . ."uh uh". . .
I took that as a negative.
We got along just fine the little gardener and I. . . .
until Gampa came along and then it was game over. . . .
No worries. . .they both bribe easily to be my friend with cookies.

Early this spring I purchased several bags of dahlia roots.

I carefully planned the colors to coordinate with the roses and the lily.

I planned them all in pinks. ..

and surprise. . .

Sunshine Yellow with Red Tiger Stripes. . ..

Huge flowers with lots of spunk I'd say.

This bud is still unfolding. . .

It's diameter is that of a drinking glass. . .

I'm excited.

OH .. .and these little girls are keeping a secret in the center.

I keep waiting for them to fully open. . .

but whatever is in the center of them. .

they are keeping close to their hearts.

This red beauty. . .teased me a bit. . ."look at us. . .we have pinkish petals on the outside".

I've developed a new fascination with dahlias.

Next year I have an iris bed that is going to be rudely uprooted.

(I've already hired up a gardener and a wee assistant he has)

I'm going to go to the store .. .

close my eyes. . .

grab several bags in the dahlia section. . .

and plant them. . .

with one eye closed.

Shall we all?

cool evenings

We still go to our tent most evenings. . .

and when we run out of things to talk about. . .

there is always scrabble. . .

and freshly picked blackberries from our back forty.

It's still to early to wear these jammies. . .

but not to early to enjoy seeing them hanging about.

OH .. .and who won the game?

He did . .

if you invite them . .they'll come

So anyways .. . .

Before we left on our two weeks into the land of no cell phone reception nor electricity . . .

We sent out the word where we'd be .. .

and sent out a casual invitation. ..

"if you are driving by .. . .STOP!"

A few folks took us up on it.

After the kids left on Sunday. . .

we felt a bit lonely.

On Monday. . .the first motor home came driving up.

Woo hoo.

I'm a big advocate of holidays for the two of us . . .

time to relax and reconnect away from the farm and the phones. .

but we love family and friends and so I'm a big advocate of holidays with them too.

Ray and Becky brought along with long son .. .

Robbie turned 17 at the campsite. ..

and he came in handy when we wanted the trailer ceiling dusted.

At six foot seven. . .he officially is the longest friend we have.

All good things must come to an end.

The good weather ended on Tuesday. . .

it poured.

Robbie taught us a new card game.

After 4 hours of playing cards under the tarp. . .

the rain took a pause. .

and we went for a walk.

It was already dusk. ..and the walk through the campsite was typical.

We generally crane our necks trying to see what everyone else is cooking.

With the camp fire ban on .. . everyone goes to bed early. . .

and it is dark .. .very quick.

A couple was walking towards us. . .holding hands. . .

They saw the lot of us. . .but didn't walk to the right side . ..(as is trail crossing etiquette)

They came right at us .. .

Our friends Kathy and S. . .. were officially joining the party.

I love nothing more than friends inviting us for dinner. . .

Friends within walking distance. . .

is pure goodness.

A big slab of salmon for the BBQ .. Fettuccine and grilled veggies.

This girl knows how to make a camp meal.

And that. . .is the end of my documentation of Manning 2009.

visitors

On Sunday . . .

first the red truck pulled up .. .

and then the red car pulled up. ..

and the grand party began.

There was a good deal of gopher hunting.

The funniest thing was the lil' farm hand trying to coax them over by making "tsk" noises .. .deep into the holes.

When he sensed he was being unsuccessful .. .

he looked up at Gampa. ..and said. .

"Gampa. . .tsk tsk".

Surely Gampa would have better luck at luring them out of their holes.

It was a good day. . .

a very good day.

After filling their tummy's and bathing them in the little trailer tub .. .

we waved goodbye. . ..

delighted that they had all come.

Today is a grammie day. . .

Yesterday was a flu day. . .

I think I'll like today much better.

Poland Lake

Let this be a lesson to you all. . .
Bring your pole to Poland lake.
How would I have known that fish would be jumping ?
How would I know that I would miraculously and curiously change my mind in the parking lot .. . .of which trail I felt an inspiration to hike?

He said. . . "do you want to hike up from Strawberry flats to the Skyline Ridge?
(We had previously hiked that from the lower parking lot and the hike from the higher Strawberry flats would allow us to hike further to Snow Cap Mountain)
I said. . ."sure"
We hopped in the truck. . .drove to the parking lot at Strawberry Flats. . .
and I changed my mind.
I said. . . "do you feel like hiking to Poland Lake instead?"
He said. . ."should I have brought my fishing pole?"
I said. . ."not if the fish have the same inclination for not eating your flies as the fish in Lightening Lake are inclined to disregard."

So .. .off we went. . ..on the trail to Poland Lake.

The hike follows a wide path that looks suspiciously like it is used for quading or snowmobiling.

Quading is not allowed in Manning Park .. .
but as the Gibson Pass Ski Area makes itself seen as we hike by foot back and forth up the mountain. . .
it is obvious that someone is allowed to use snowmobiles on the road. . .
likely during winter to rescue folks.

In the shot above you can make out the ski chalet where we've enjoyed hot chocolate on boxing day a few winters ago .

Those buildings are about 30 minutes from where we started our hike.

(They have the road closed up to the parking lot for summer. . .and they trick you into walking up the road by offering a wooded trail beside the road. . .which we declined to use on our return and rather used the full straight road.

Upon our return . . .

we passed the time on the straight 20 minutes section of straight gravel road by trying to see how straight we could walk with our eyes closed. (0ne at a time)

Oh. . . . I enclosed the shot above for your amusement.

This lone tree along the ski trail has become a lingerie hanger.

Maybe you can see them. . .maybe not. .
We counted about 20 cast offs. . .

(in winter?. . . . .really)

So .. .anyways. . .

We got to Poland Lake in time for lunch.

It took us two hours and twenty minutes.

We found a nice log. . .far away from the shelter that I thought looked more like a hiding place for bears.

We opened up our lunch. . . which is the same lunch we take on all our hikes.

We love it.

After lunch. . .

I took pictures of flowers. . .
whilst my beloved stood in agony watching the fish jump.

Fish?

Yes. . .Fish.

Many fish.

Let this be a lesson to you. . .
Take your fishing pole on your hikes. . .
even if you don't think you are hiking to a lake. .

because you never know. . .
when hiking plans will change.

I did my best to soothe the hunter. . .gatherer. . .
but the beast in him would not easily. . .
be soothed.

So .. . .
off we went back down the path. . .and up the path. . . and down the path. . . .

(yes it was another one of those hikes. . .up and down and up again).

About a third of the way down. . .
we found a narrow trail marked hikers.

We felt we could be considered novice hikers. . .
and so we took the trail which we figured could only lead back to the buildings down at the bottom. It did.

Anyways. . . .
that is the day trip to Poland Lake without a fishing pole.

I grilled up some Salmon and shrimp for dinner. . . (had some tucked in the freezer)
. . . .clever girl that I am.

Tomorrow. .
You never know who will come to visit you when you go camping.

All for now. . .
