full of love

She is as her pajama top suggests.

Sometimes you just have to smile and open your wallet when you see things in the store.
I pray her heart will always be more full of love than hate....
and her joy will be evident to all.

What are you doing with your extra day of February?
I am making some fresh berry scones...
putting on a pot of coffee and then we are meeting someone new!

Later....the little ones will be by to clean up the rest of the scones.
How fun is that?

the amaryllis plants

I think she has done her very best!
I set her outside for a photo op yesterday.
She quivered in the chilly breeze.
The lighting was better outside...
so I took her photo quickly and rushed her back indoors.

Her table mate...
stayed indoors.
She did not go out of a photo op.
She has no stem...
 and no bud.

Was she of an unmotivated tendency?
Is she just a late bloomer?
Does she refuse to own her purpose in life?

Many different analogies came to mind.
I'm sure you can just imagine what was swimming around my mind.

At the end of the day...
I just put  her back on the table and gave her honorable mention.

Did you all watch the Oscars last night?
We caught the end...
with the important bits.
I will see the highlights today with the best and the worst dressed.

And...
that reminds me of my Amaryllis again.

Birthday Dinner Delight!

Last night we were invited to Scot and Kathy's for dinner.
OH... boy...we were happy.

Look at her beautiful table.
Did I say we were happy?

It just so happened that the Canucks were offering up some entertainment for the evening.

They even dragged out the entertainment to the last possible moment...
winning in a shoot out!

Happy!

Oh the things that come out of the Big Green Egg.

Delicious pizzas.
Two different crusts and different toppings.
I'll keep those secrets for her to share.

I'll  just to allow you a peek at the dessert share plates made for two...

Did I mention I was happy?

I'm very blessed too.

Today the rain is pouring and the house is dark...
but I have a bit of cheer in the back of a mini-van...
hurrying over ...
right now.

I best go make some noodles for lunch.

I'm out and about!

When you get to be my age...
it can't all be celebrated in one day.  =)

Pastors Appreciation 2012

Last year while we were cleaning up after the Pastors Appreciation Dinner....
we decided that we would serve them Mennonite food this year.

And so...
that is what we did.

Linda made the cabbage rolls.

If you know her...
you understand why she got the job.

She managed to create perfectly same sized cabbage rolls out of  heads of cabbage that do not have perfect same sized leaves.

We made Zweiback...
because we knew that if nothing else would be tasty for them...
everyone loves a bun.

We made Wareneki.

I rolled...
while they stuffed them and pinched them shut.

A very gifted person came with flowers.

She created decorations surrounding the bounty of the earth and the tools that reminded us of the past.

A tablecloth that was given to me for a wedding gift was centered in the very long table.

Give us this day...our daily bread.

The candles were lit..
and the table was set.

As they arrived...
I cooked the noodles for the chicken noodle soup..
while the simple green salad waited for the second course.

We gave them the "very short" version of why we eat the food we eat.
We sang the Doxology...
and they ate.

Inspired by the popular restaurant idea of dessert trios...
we plated a still hot  (fried them during the main course) Portzelky,
a piece of Rhubarb Platz and a  piece of Bienenstich.

When they were filled to capacity..
we brought little bags for them to take their favorites home.

While we cleaned up...
we planned the menu for 2013.

Thank you again to Richard and Dorothy our amazing hosts and Sweet Dreams Inn keepers.

Praise Baby

These days...Grandgirlie refers to her baby sister as...
"the baby".

"The baby"....is eighteen months old and doesn't seem to mind the title bestowed upon her.

Last week one Grammie Day I was having a particularly tricky time since Grandgirlie was needing  a team mate with a game...
and "the baby"  had not been invited.

I remembered that I had not pulled out my Praise Baby DVD with this "baby" yet...
so I popped it in and popped her in her chair with a pre-nap snack...
and peace flooded "my soul"....the home.

If you have a special friend who will be a Grammie soon...
add this to the "new Grammie" congratulations card.

It might not be something you enjoy watching...
but the gentle voices of the children singing will change the focus of your day.

You just might find yourself turning on the Praise Baby...
even...
when 'the baby' goes home.

hands on cereal

Did you all buy cereal biscuits for your babies?
I did ...
and recently picked up a fresh box.

Nothing much has changed since early 1980.
The same babies on the box and the same "great" flavour.

At least....that is what he tells me.

Mid February

Where does the time go?
It can't be mid February already...
or is it?

I seems I barely put away Christmas and the theme of red...
and now it won't be long and we will be thinking towards Easter.

It takes effort to live in the moment...
doesn't it?

I remember a time when my life was about the future and the plans I anticipated.

Relaxation with a capital R....  might be within reach...
but I do not want to not miss a day between now and then.

Happy Valentines Day!

It is not about what someone will do for me that makes Valentines Day the best.
It is about being content.
I am.

Have the most wonderful day!

Purpose and PULSE

Cooking class in January at Lepp Farm Market took on a whole different level of nervous energy.
Before the class began...
a film team sent by Northview Church came to interview Anneliese and I.

The church has created a number of these little videos with a purpose.
They are meant to "encourage you with the stories of people “on mission” and equip you with information and ideas so that you too can be “on mission” for God’s glory and the good of our city."

I have told the story often since the blog began of how it all began...
and consider it a privilege to share what God can do with willing hearts and simple ideas.

I've learned so much during the last three and a half years since beginning Mennonite Girls Can Cook.
Though I had a fleeting thought of starting a cooking blog on my own...
I knew it would be a daunting task and indeed I am thankful that God gave me the gift of the nine women who agreed to join me in recordin our heritage recipes.

None of us could have known that the simple idea of documenting our recipes would expand to become a book.
Our level of organization at the beginning was rudimentary at best.
With a team who is willing to learn and try new things...
and has a spirit of cooperation as this team does...
we were able to function at a level...
that most board rooms ...
would envy.

Something else that I could have never anticipated was the monetary compensation that we would be able to receive from our labor of love.
To think we decided at the time to give 100% of future royalties to charity is nearly humorous considering  we had no written business plan.
We believe that God was in the project providing the framework...
from the beginning.

We expected when we had our children early in our marriage that we would have lots of life left in us when they would be come adults.  Though we never had plans for that future we can see now that God had a purpose in those early years of our marriage.

Our children  have married and ...

we became happy residers of an empty nest.

I began to blog here out of a desire to pen my thoughts and find a creative outlet for photography.

Mennonite Girls Can Cook was born.

We became Grandparents....woo hoo!!.

This last year the MGCC has authored a book.

This is my life?
I surely can say "it's a wonderful life."

So...you can see now that when we were asked to do a PULSE video I felt more nervous than I normally would.
The producer asked me why that might be.
I thought for a moment and then replied that it is because what I say on that little clip matters.
It matters most that I share truthfully and with the conviction I feel that when God gives us health and strength it should not be frittered away.

I have felt that I want to have purpose and make my life count to honor the one who gave me life.

Am I grateful?
Oh yes...
I am.

May God bless each of the girls who answered the call to do something that would make a difference...
in our communities and further to the ends of the earth.
It is a privilege to share this remarkable journey with them all.

her haven of rest

Auntie Mary on the left and Mom on the right.
Auntie Mary was four years younger and they celebrated their birthdays together every year since they were only a few days apart.

Every time I see Auntie Mary...
she mentions my Mom.
"I miss her" she says....without fail.
I believe her and know those words have been thought much more often than only on the days she sees me.

Those sisters have not seen each other for seventeen years.
Auntie Mary celebrated another birthday this last week.

My Mom...would have turned 90 today.

Imagine this....
her life has only begun.
Eternity is not something we can fathom.
Everything we know begins and ends.
Mom was wise to place her trust is something greater than her own knowledge.

She was a big fan of the Haven of Rest radio broadcast.
She rarely missed it.
Even as a young child  when the theme song  would begin...
I knew my Mom would  head to her chair...
knitting in hand...
Bible open and pen and notebook near by.

I opened up her Haven of Rest song book today and looked at the theme song I often heard.

Chorus...."I've anchored my soul in the haven of rest.
I'll sail the wide seas no more.
The tempest may sweep o'er the wild, stormy deep.
In Jesus I'm safe ever more."

I love the last verse too...

4.  "Oh come to the Saviour,
He patiently waits
To save by His power divine.
Come, anchor your soul in the haven of rest,
And say,   "My beloved is mine" .

Haven of Rest is now called Haven Today can be found here.

when it pays to stay home

Far be it from me to cast a shadow on another's travel plans.
I would not want to discourage a soak in the sun ...
or a splash in the ocean.
If you are reading this from the comfort of your lounge and can casually flick a bit of sand at will...
carry on.

It does seem though that staying home and observing the seasons as they come...
might just be reason enough to stick out the rain..
so that when the clouds part for a week...
we feel truly grateful..
for 14 degrees C.

Fresh chopped chives..
in February...
in Canada.

Sweet simple pleasures.
