At the Cross

Alas, and Did my Saviour Bleed

Issac Watts 1707

Alas and did my Saviour bleed?
And did my Sovereign die?
Would he devote that sacred head
For such a worm as I?

Chorus . . .At the cross, at the cross where I first saw the light,
And the burden of my heart rolled away.
It was there by faith I received my sight,
And now I am happy all the way

Was it for crimes that I have done,
He groaned upon that tree?
Amazing pity! Grace unknown!
And love beyond degree!

Well might the sun in darkness hide,
And shut His glories in,
When Christ the mighty Maker, died
For man the creature's sin.

But drops of grief can ne'er repay
the debt of love I owe,
Here Lord, I give myself away,
'Tis all that I can do!

At the cross, at the cross, Where I first saw the light,
And the burden of my heart rolled away,
It was there by faith I received my sight,
and now I am happy all the day.

  2. Good Morning Lovella,
This is such a beautiful hymn, and is very special to me. As a child I remember sitting with my grandmother listening to her sing this beautiful hymn.

I was so blessed by your last post as well, grandparents are so special and play such an important role in their grandchildren lives. May you continue to give them what is most important in their lives,...time spent at your feet, and near your heart.
Wishing you and your family a most blessed Happy Easter.

  3. That is the song they played the Sunday morning I, at 12 years old, walked to the front of the church and gave my heart to Him. "At the cross at the cross where I first saw the light." What beautiful words. I am so thankful that I belong to Him. Thank you for the beautiful reminder today of my salvation. A free gift to all who will receive.

  5. Good Morning, Lovella~
Thank you for sharing this amazing photo and poem.

Your Easter Sunday post {last year} was at the very beginning of my first year of blogging. I can still remember the beautiful white flower and the heartfelt prayer you wrote.
It gave me much comfort to know that God's love truly is found everywhere.

A Glorious Easter to you and your family~ Maria

  6. Interesting how some of us have reflected similar thoughts for today...last night...I tried to look for the Old Rugged Cross, but could not find Bev Shea...
How the old songs speak to us for TODAY!!

  7. It's at the cross where we still leave our burdens, our shame and failures . . . realizing that He died because of them . . .to offer forgiveness.
The price Jesus paid for our reconciliation is beyond our understanding. Love so amazing, so divine.

  9. What fitting lyrics to think on today. Thank you for reminding me of this one more song we often have sung on Good Friday. I spent some meaningful time reading in Matt. today. I'm so grateful that Jesus thought of The Father's will above all...and died for me...for everyone. Kathy (MGCC)

  10. One of my favorite songs of all time. The words bring tears whenever I hear them. So great a debt I had and so much greater the payment He paid. So comforting. So reassuring. This song will remain in my heart the rest of the day.

Wishing you and your family times of rejoicing together, because He lives.
