Pussy Willows

My mom taught me that some of the best things in life are free.

The earliest indication of spring .. .for me,

is the pussy willow.

You can't lolligag. . .

those soft little puffs turn to little green sprouts faster than you could imagine.

Every year I'm on the look out for the perfect pussy willow patch .. .

and this year. . . I found the best patch ever.

There is not a bouquet in the world .. .that could make me smile like this one did.

Do you all have pussy willows where you live?

All for now. .with love,

  1. Yes, we have some pussy willows and, thanks to your post, I'm going to have John round some up for me, if they're ready. (Not too sure about that part.)

  2. I haven't seen any pussy willows in my walks, but I think it's because the woods are so dense here. I'll have to take a walk somewhere new and keep my eyes open, because you're right - they really do say 'spring'.

  3. What a wonderful patch and bouquet. I haven't been walking around water here in Southern california but I'm sure I'd see some by streams here. Have a great day Lovella!

  7. Oh I love pussy willows, one of the first signs of spring and your bouquet is wonderful, Lovella!
Nope none here..we'll be waiting for awhile so I'll just enjoy your pics.
I know spring is here when I spot the first robin.

  8. I saw bunches of pussy willows at the garden centre this past week, but the word 'free' came to my mind too. We had good intentions of a drive yesterday and I was all prepared to find a patch of pussy willows, but we felt so rotten all day that the drive was short and sweet. We turned around and both slept all day. Enjoy your bouquet! I just may go spend $5.99. Kathy

  9. Oh I love pussy willows too and almost planted some a few years back, but changed my mind when I saw the enormous tree on my friend's yard...never knew they could grow that big!
We look for robins here too... they'll be a little while yet.

Those are beautiful pussy willows; I am on the east coast (NB) and it will be awhile yet before we see any.....too much snow. :)

  12. Oh, this Willow loves those pussies!

I had pussy willows in Oregon. The only places I know there are willows here (besides ME!) are on public land.

  13. When I planted my berry and flower garden in the backyard of our first house, Laura was just a baby. By the time she began toddling around, she would follow me around the garden, touching and "oohing" everything. I made a special trip just to buy a pussy willow shrub to plant in the garden for her. She still remembers how soft it felt and how it was just for her. We both love 'em!

  14. Pussy Willows were my mom's sign of spring too - she had a old brown pottery jug by the front entryway that she used to fill with them.

But we don't get them until April.

Do you have mayflowers out west? That's another sign of spring for us. I think they are really trailing arbutus. They smell so sweet.

  15. I remember my Father bringing my mom the first bouquet of the season. I love them...
I think that would be a good goal on my walk tomorrow.

  18. My mom loves pussy willows too and I remember her finding them when we were little. I would love to find a bush out here, but haven't seen them. Oh I'm sure they are around somewhere, just not in the area where I walk. I'll have to keep looking! :) My kids would just love to pet those soft little pussies.

  19. I am in California and I haven't seen any yet, but I do live in the city. I did live in Ireland until 5 years ago and am very familiar with pussywillow and just realised I miss them! They look really beautiful. God is good to give us such beauty.

  20. Beautiful! They are so hard to find where I live --- but not impossible. It's time to go searching (well, maybe in 3 or 4 more weeks).
