January 2015

January 1st is always Portzelky making day.
Our kids, big and small came to spend the day and take part in the big fry.
The weather was lovely and so the kids played outside and came back in with healthy appetites.

Early January we had a short winter!
I had to be on the ball or else I would have nearly missed it.
School was even cancelled for the kids because of a power outage!

As soon as the inch of snow had fallen, the flakes turned to drizzle and I looked outside the window to see freezing rain icicles....
which melted a day later.

We enjoyed sometime reading bedtime stories.

I took down the Christmas decorations and reorganized with  a few winter decorations to brighten the dark winter nights.

With winter over...
we enjoyed some sunny skies.

My beloved started to get the itch to dig around in the gardens and moved some plants around.

Half way during the month...
he decided it was time to shave off the winter growth and
with that thought in mind...
kept going on the shrubbery outside.

I got all the last of the perennials cut down.

We enjoyed a few days outside sipping coffee and noting bees and flies buzzing around.

We spent one very early morning to wait in a line up to get a spot for our baby grand to go to preschool.

Big sigh...

We are watching our bulbs come up and now that it is February and I look ahead to the 14 day weather trend...
I feel fairly confident that they'll bloom without their little buds having to fight off anymore frost.

Today it is Groundhog day...
what does the groundhog say in your part of the world?

all for now...
with love,

  1. Oh my - I can't believe how Springy it is in your part of the world! Today all the schools are closed and there is deep snow everywhere over here - not sure the groundhog will be able to dig himself out this morning! The snow is pretty but .... I long for Spring. Your post today gives me hope that it will come. I've missed you....

  2. It's nice to see your post this morning Lovella. The groundhog in NS says 6 more weeks of winter which is no surprise to me. We'll probably have 10 more weeks! Another blizzard is coming this afternoon and through the night tonight. It's been very wintery here the past week or so, which you've probably heard. It's so refreshing to see the signs of spring in your area already and I must say I'm a bit jealous. Have a great week.

  3. Oh boy...I totally forgot about Groundhog day. I'll have to see what the old Punxsutawney Phil had to say about winter. What a great variety of events and weather January brought. Hope February brings lots of good blessings your way!

  4. Well he hasn't seen his shadow and neither have we. For us that means ONLY six more weeks of winter. =D

The baby grand is off to preschool? How did that happen so soon?

May you enjoy a warm and loving February.

  6. I've enjoyed the mild winter but keep wondering if we are in for a surprise yet. I'm so glad February is here. I will pick up some tulips soon and celebrate the promise of Spring!

  7. This blog post looks like something that we usually do in March...except we don't have Portzelky. January is finished and now with one more month we all are inviting 'real spring' to happen never tot early...but just in time. Enjoy the month of February. It promises some family events that are worth celebrating.

  8. haha - I'm reading your spring-time post while listening to another storm warning - the 4th in about 8 days. Our end of the island will get some rain plus snow but the western end is getting all snow. I'm sure they're getting a little weary. Keep posting your spring-time shots and I'll pop over to enjoy them. :)

  9. Our forecast...more snow tonight and bitter cold temperatures. I can't believe what I am seeing here on your beautifully done post, with green buds bursting forth and time to be in the outdoors, with sunshine. I know spring is coming here, but you would find that easier to believe. I like your arbor. What blooms on it when it blooms? The first picture looks so good, that I want to learn to make it.

  10. That's a lot of garden work already done!! Nothing like that down here. We've had a very mild winter but not mild enough for garden work. :) Rachel just signed up for tennis at school but needs to learn to play before the beginning of March so I guess if we can find any day that heads toward 40F we might need to go find a tennis court. :) yikes! We just studied about Canada and their independence yesterday in school. Planning to show the kids a dvd of Canada tomorrow. :) I'm quite sure I would feel very at home there. And, of course, that is where the LeFebvres come from -- French Canada -- just three generations back.

  11. Over here the groundhog would have been very wet had he popped out of his hole! Our winter has been mild and very wet - but I am not complaining!
I enjoyed this look at your January.
