Polly P Poinsettia . . please go now.

Is is just me that continues to recite the words to the Dr. Seuss board books in my head after the grands leave?
Marvin K. Mooney will you please go now. . . I hadn't forgotten the words from the first round of kids. . .and now I have them all rumbling around again.
At one year old. . .they aren't necessarily interested on how the book ends. . .so my brain isn't reciting the end every few minutes. . .but the beginning. . .oh my.
Have you all tossed your poinsettia's already, or are you dealing with the yearly poinsettia toss guilt syndrome?
I fixed my little guilt syndrome problem. . .at least in this one Christmas planter. .
I whispered sweet nothings to the planter as I took it outside for some "fresh air".
Once outdoors. . .I slipped the tablespoon out of my pocket. . .
and dug around the poinsettia, being careful not to alert it's bed mates that something was amiss. . . .
After removing the objectionable faded Poinsettia plants . . .I added a primrose and a small bunch of daffodils. . .
After we finished our "fresh air". . .we went back inside. . .red to yellow. . .
The other two slightly weary Poinsettia's were retired. . .they've earned their keep. . .
my years of watering them until the last leaf drops .. . are done.
All for now. . with love,

  2. My poor poinsettia has spent the last three below-freezing nights languishing on the patio. Was it an oversight on my part that it wasn't brought in on those cold nights? Hmmm. I don't think so.

  4. I was going to suggest some fresh air, and then saw that you'd already thought of it. I'm sure that Polly P will be pleased to go on 'giving' pleasure in the compost bin!

  5. Your planter is so pretty! I noticed it in an earlier picture this week. I have some paper whites that are in full bloom right now (inside) and they fill the house with their lovely perfume.

Yes, poinsettia guilt -- that's why I turned mine into cut flowers after Christmas. I have two stalks that have lasted 3 weeks now in a vase!

  6. That looks beautiful! An excellent solution. Yes, I have so much guilt about the poinsettias that I often don't get one just so I won't experience it. Now doesn't that sound pathetic?

    Enjoy your weekend, Lovella!

  7. In So. Cal we dig them into the garden where they either wither away or grow into trees that tower over the house. If you get a tree, that takes care of the poinsettia buying costs; you just hack a few bracks, burn the cut end and use them in decorating for the season.

  8. You found the pefect plant mates for your holiday planter. I bade my poinsettias farewell last weekend...and in their place are some lovely peace lilies.

  9. So sad, as I listen to your story...Mine are still being faithfully watered and my beautiful tree is standing outside, but in front of my patio....
It's still gives the wintry feeling.
But I agree...there needs to be some added color.

  10. This year I chose not to have a poinsettia, but I have already enjoyed some eary spring bulbs on my table and delivered two bunches to some sweet people I know. The minute I see spring flowers in the stores I buy them. Such a cheery arrangement you made to welcome the upcoming spring, but hold onto the stars that remind us to linger on the Christmas season. 11. No poinsettia guilt here because my first one didn't even make it till Christmas and then the second one lost it's leaves in short order too. I think, they just don't grow 'em like they used to!
(secretly, I don't even like them too much - I don't whisper sweet nothings to them - maybe that's my problem)

  12. I love the look of spring Lovella..good move on your part!
I didn't get a poinsettia this Christmas and I really didn't miss it.

  13. I tossed ALL the red a couple of weeks ago. I was so tired of red. Actually I tossed the poinsettias to the back terrace by planting them to see if they'd grow. Poinsettias do grow big and tall and wild down here.

Oh. And Dr. Seuss's ABC book can be quoted by both The Professor and me, even after 34 years! And now we begin again.

  14. I am so happy to see the primulas. I am sure all is forgiven in the plant world that you have moved onto a new season. :)

  18. Hee hee...I am lucky if my poinsettia even survives the first week after the pre-Christmas purchase. But we still have staff that have them blooming in their offices...of course, I think there is a lot of fertilizer happening in those rooms! Gosh..can I say that in blogdom?! HA!

  19. Your new look is in keeping with the season and is so fresh and pretty. Yup - I relegated my P. to the back flower bed until spring cleanup. I love the colour they bring to my Christmas decorating but once the season is over - I neglect the poor things until I hAE to toss them out.

  20. I've even stopped using Poinsettia's! No guilt at all. Enjoyed fir and other lovely mixed greens this year.

My first "Grand" is 15 mos...we are still on "Goodnight Moon"...about time to add Dr. Seuss lines. They DO stick in one's head!
