coping with the beauty of autumn

It's the craziest thing. . . at night when we are snug as bugs sleeping wide awake. . . under our down quilt and flannelet sheets with the window open. . .the wind is blowing and I can hear the leaves scraping the sidewalk. I anticipate the morning when I can crunch leaves and clean up assist the gardener with the daily raking.
In the morning .. .it is raining and the leaves are like Frosted Flakes that have been soaking while you poured coffee.
This was the tree in the front yard yesterday. . .and tomorrow I'll show you what the system passing through did to it.
Now, we are awaiting the wind to come through and blow the remains to the neighbors. . .
Hey Ravi. . .you best hope for a North Eastern. . .
Have a great day my friends.

  1. I love the beautiful golden leaves on your deep green grass. Our leaves just turn brown and fall ... nothing noteworthy because we don't get the beautiful show of color ... our temps don't get cool enough. But the noteworthy thing we have DO have this autumn is the acorns ... thousands and thousands of them! They plink against our metal roof all during the night and day, and walking in my side yard is like trying to walk on a floor covered with marbles. A bumper crop of acorns? Won't the squirrels be fat and happy THIS winter!

  2. We only have a few single leaves left hanging on a branch here and there. Our yard is covered though - and I'm hoping for a big wind too.

  3. Lovella...I haven't been by in a while and I notice your wonderful photography again...capturing the essence of the season. Beautiful shots of the wonderful autumn colours we were so fortunate to actually see this fall in this usually dreary climate. Of course, now the rain has settled in it seems. Oh well...it means only one thing...time to get up the Christmas tree...yep!

  4. So, are we to guess that the tree is completely bare now? Very few of the trees around us lose many of their leaves, although we are seeing a little color change in some of them.

I had to laugh at Trish's comment about putting up the Christmas tree. I chatted with a friend yesterday who really goes overboard with her Christmas decorating. She started that last week, and said that she was about 50% finished! If it took me that long, I'd want to leave it all up for a couple of months, too!

  5. You hit the nail on the head with this one! Only difference is that hubby and I ARE the gardeners! When we were looking for this house, hubby insisted on buying a house with lots of trees, and we got them! He didn't mention he hates raking and blowing leaves! And we've got weeks of falling leaves left. Sigh! Gotta enjoy those gorgeous colors while they are on the trees! Blessings, Becky

  6. Oh boy! The photos are beautiful Lovella...but it makes me wonder if dear second son is keeping on top of the leaves at the homestead. Somehow I doubt it :0)

  7. Our trees are totally bare..well there may be a leaf hanging on here and there.
I'm glad you shared that pic with us Lovella because now I'm thinking the next one will show it bare.

  8. I miss sleeping with my bedroom window open. Once the wee babe is in his own room we'll once again be sleeping snug under our duvet with crisp cold air on our noses!

  9. Every now and then we pass through a low spot where the leaves have been protected from wind. It's quite a visual sensation. For the most part, we're all done with leaves except for the last bits of mulching and raking. I'll think of you as I'm out raking the back postage stamp this afternoon.

  10. That's funny! We always secretly hope a south wind comes and sends our maple tree leaves to our neighbour too. Great minds think alike!! Heehee! We didn't get so lucky this year! Have a nice day!

  11. Sounds like you need a very brisk and windy night --- that blows all your leaves waaaaaaaaay down the street to an empty field or woods. Dream on, right? Raking leaves is a wonderfully charming activity for two --- it sounds like you are enjoying it with Terry.

    Happy day to you!

  12. I always sleep with my window open too! I love to hear the night sounds where we live now.

When we lived in Oregon, for some reason having to do with the wind pattern in our cul de sac, ALL the leaves (well, it seemed like it) blew in to our yard even though we didn't have any deciduous trees in our yard. I decided to go with the attitude of leaves being great additions to my compost bin.

  13. I assisted my gardener this weekend too, but you make it sound alot more fun than I thought it was! Mostly it was because I was thinking of what I needed to do inside...oh, but since he found out that it goes so much faster when someone holds the bags, and I'm the only one left . . . I guess I'd better start being thankful for this yearly clean up event.

  14. All your beautiful leaves are wonderful to behold. Ours have only just begun to leap off the trees, one at a time. Hardly anything to sweep up yet. Plenty of green ones still waiting for their new paint job too.
