I'm bugged

Last year I received this orchid as a gift and I've been caring for it with my best efforts ever since. After the blossoms were done I ran down to the store and picked up a fake stem with some quite realistic looking blooms. Everyone thought it was still blooming.
I was perhaps stretching the truth just a pinch but I didn't see that any harm could come from it.

The other day I as wiping off the glossing thick leaves and I noticed these.
What are they?
Have I been bugged?
What do I do?

Look . . . .
Real buds. The real buds are being bugged.
Life is like that isn't it?
I'm off to help up at the B&B.
I've got my pedometer on and I'm going to run stairs and firm up my legs. . . .
woo hoo.
Tomorrow is come with your average number of steps for five days . . .day.
Start walking . .. .you have today to bring that average up.
Have a wonderful day my friends.

  1. My advice on the plant is 'throw it out'. It seems that's what I've been hearing at my house all week...so I'll just pass along those words. Actually, I still have my real plants...it's the silk plants that were discarded.

I haven't a clue how to deal with indoor plant bugs...I think the blooming tropicals are more prone to that type of thing. Good luck!

  3. Looks like a type of scale insect (there are several types). Here in Florida, the orchid growers quarantine (and generally destroy) the orchids with scale. That's an infestation that's pretty difficult to eradicate; you have to be persistent and apply alcohol with a cotton swab to each one every day...and wash the plant with an insecticidal soap such as Safer (that's a brand name). Good luck!

If it's any consolation, I'm battling scale on my two very pricey Sagos, which hold prominent places in my landscape. Not something I really wanted to deal with while my house is on the market!

  4. I ditto what Judy said..throw it out! Unless you like working with plants and want to spend time spraying and washing leaves and..the list goes on! LOL I used to have many indoor plants and babied them but I just don't care to anymore!!
Enjoy your day at the B&B.
My pedometer goes where I do. It's been a good week..

  5. Oh my walking efforts were so dismal this week, yikes. We've had rain, rain, rain, and I left both my raincoats in Seattle. Excuses...excuses. Oh and I would have killed off that plant ages ago...

  7. Lovella,
I am very impressed you are getting buds on your orchid. Yes, the bugs are scale. You usually find them when plants go into a dormant time..winter. Two ways I have found to treat. As one commented, soapy water applied by qtip or soft cloth. My technique..crush with my fingers. It gives me some satisfaction to waging the war on my plants. My japenese maples got them lat year and the scale almost killed one of my ficus bonsai. Revenge is sweet.
Mr. B...yes, I am feeling better.
