working the soil

The kale had served us well.
All winter it produced and in spring it took off again.  I was making kale salads and found it hard to pull out the old to make room for the new...

but...
the rototiller seemed to have it's own mind and anything I wanted saved had to be set aside.

Potatoes that were volunteering from last year...
were removed and replanted and we'll see how they feel about that.

I love watching the earth being turned over.
I just watched from the sidelines with my packets of seeds and starter plants all in a row.

I've been using rhubarb and I'm happy to say that since this picture was taken...
the plants have been taken down a notch.

These pictures were taken a few weeks ago and now I spend a bit of time in the garden every few days...
picking out weeds and finding joy in the new seedlings.

It's a good thing...
growing food.

first bouquet of roses 2014

Once a year when spring is full...
my roses begin to bloom.

They are just as I remember them...
and worth the wait.

I love spring.
I am reminded that God's promises are new every morning.

all for now...

dust cover happiness

People are asking us now and then if we are working on a new project...
and the answer is no we're not.

With nothing new on the horizon we were pleasantly surprised to get mail from MennoMedia letting us know that they had been thinking about us.

They have been meeting with book buyers and who strongly encouraged them to put dust covers and matte hard covers on our cookbooks to reach new markets..

They took this advice right to the design team and they  immediately began to work on designing a new dust cover and a new look for the hard cover.

I was thrilled!
The cookbooks that I have collected over the years have dust cover and a matte hard cover and somehow when we began talking about making our first cookbook...
I envisioned it to have a dust cover.

Since book One was ready for a reprint ...
it was the perfect time for MennoMedia to make the change.

I have enough of our first printing books tucked away to give one to each grandchild when they are old enough to set up their own homes.

I'll still use my original book in my kitchen.
It is beginning to look like a well loved and well used book.

While I was baking up Rhubarb Bars for a big dinner for those that serve so diligently on our church board...
I used the new covered book that they sent me and then took it to the bookshelf where I lined it up  with all the other cookbooks tucked into their dust covers.

The newest printing has been done in Canada and stays open beautifully.

When I think of how it has allowed us to build a greenhouse at an orphanage in the Ukraine...
and will continue to help hungry children..
I'm thankful that a reprint was necessary.

In the end...
it's not about what we prefer but what matters most is knowing that God can use our all that we offer and increase it in ways we never imagine to help children.

Fairy Garden

Not only did I have the sweetest little visit from two small fairies on Mother's Day...
I was left with a garden to tend in their absence.

Tiny foliage...
and
tiny furniture...
that was planted and created ....

to make me smile...
and feel loved.

If I tend it...
will they come?

loving lilacs

I love lilacs.

They make me think of my mom and the hedge row of old fashioned spring bushes that divided our lawn from the vegetable garden on the farm I grew up on.

The first bush was forsythia, then bridal wreath, then japonica and snowballs and then nearest the road was the purple lilac.

My lilacs are all but finished for spring 2014.

Are the lilacs still blooming at your house?

Maybe I'll pop on over and take in the scent over a cup of tea.

the lilies

hello friends...

are you prone to worry?

I confess I am.

When the truths of the Bible pair so beautifully with what I see on my knees in my garden...
I naturally reach for my camera to create something beautiful to use a visual reminder of God's care for lilies...

and for all those I hold most dear.

Living in the moment on the Victoria Day long weekend 2014

Seeing the peony buds swell!

Roses ...
sweet roses.

Hearing happy chatter while we are still at the table and then finding that they found their own place for eating ice cream cones.

Eavesdropping on the discussions about broken wheels.

Giggles... lots of giggles.
Live in the moment and enjoy each gift that brings you joy.

Happy Victoria Day to you...
and yours.

..all for now.

how to write a proper letter

Use high quality stationary.

Decide on a colour that best represents your mood ....

and sentiment you wish to convey.

If necessary...

pick another colour that matches your pajamas.

If you are very tired...
lay on the table to write.

Hum a little while you write.

Take your time and share your heart.

When becoming fatigued during a particularly lengthy letter...

find a place that will ensure a foot massage.

Don't forget to seal your letter with a kiss.

wheels

Grammie ...."no racing".

Everyone else... "I'll race you".

Grammie .... "slow down"

Everyone else... "try to catch me"

For some..
the goal is simply to entertain me.
I appreciate that.

Keep it steady buddy...

Don't look behind...
keep looking ahead.

Don't worry too much about taking a break to show a little love.

dandelions

After school...
there is no hope for immediate homework here.

A run in the field without socks and shoes...

with a faithful dog who is always willing to play the game.

Running with arms stretched wide...
back and forth...
back and ...
forth.

Watching and waiting for the best one.

Not everyone on the farm loves the delight of dandelion seeds...

But no one can deny ...
that at least watching little children...
finding enjoyment in weeds ...

makes it all ...

worthwhile.

all for now...
with love,
