from the top of a manure pile

He came in just as the sun was setting yesterday and pointed to the berries in the field behind us.

"I was standing on top of the manure pile and the view was so incredible.".. he said.
"oh really?"...I replied.. "I saw.... it was pretty amazing?"

I had thought about grabbing my camera because I could see the fog rolling out while I was getting dinner on but didn't go out.

Looking out the kitchen door he says...
"It was nicer a little while ago"... but give me your camera...I'll go stand up on the pile and take some pictures for you".

And he did...

Sometimes when you are on top of a manure pile...
you can see a perspective that no one else sees.

I was thinking...
there is probably some quote that says something to the effect ...

You can't always control where you are standing in your situation...
but if you look up ...
instead of where your feet are...
you can change your attitude and see something God is doing in your circumstance.

Appreciating Northview Pastors

We were privileged to be invited by Richard and Dorothy
to participate in showing appreciation to the Northview Pastors and their spouses again this last weekend.

We arrive on Sunday after lunch and by that time...
they have purchased all the groceries and Lois (their go-to florist) has beautiful flowers arranged and the tables just need to be set which our guys do with a kind of Downton Abby perfection.

Those of us in the kitchen watch each other cut and chop...
peel and roll...
and ...
think about all the menus we have served over the years.

This year the menu was..

APPETIZERS
 Bacon wrapped sausages
 Mexican tortilla spirals
 Brie with pecans

DINNER
Steak with mushroom sauce
Turkey roll wrapped in bacon
Scalloped potatoes
Green beans with pearl onions and carrots.
French Bread
Greek and Spinach Salads

DESSERT
Chocolate Pie
Lemon Pie
Coconut Cream Pie

It is great to be able to see our pastoral staff in a setting where they can visit as couples...
laughing and eating and being on the other end of serving.

After dinner...
we cut up the pies...

and packaged up their take home treats.
Dorothy made up big scoops of cookie dough and froze it to go along with their hot chocolate for two!

We were some of the first couples to ever stay night at their beautiful inn...
a decision that we have never regretted and was the beginning of a friendship that has blessed us many times over.

It's a weekend we look forward to ...
from year to year.

before breakfast

I went outside this morning early to see what time he wants breakfast.
The temperatures are supposed to be close to 8 Celsius today...
which seems perfect to me.

My hubster who is driving tractor over the fields with tractor bucket loads of manure....
would rather it all stay frozen for one more day.

His thought...
get out there and get that pullet barn cleaned out before the ground starts to thaw....
and it all becomes "a sloppy mess".

And that...
is what is happening on the opposite side of the sunrise!

Birthday photos 2014

Every year...
I take a birthday photo to document ...
another year...
older.

2014 ~ Fifty Five.

It just doesn't happen more than once in a lifetime..
that one wakes up to a beautiful winter wonderland...
on February 23.

Less often yet...
has your country won a Gold Medal in Men's Hockey before your day even began.

If you know me...
you already know I love our flag...
and our country.

I love playing in  the beauty of the snow...

and once in awhile...
being on the other side of the  camera lens.

Because I can't imagine a more beautiful setting..
there were no grands about to photograph...
And so I grabbed the farmer and we did  a little of both.

The rest of the day we were busy making dinner at our friends with a group of good friends for our pastor appreciation dinner.

It was the best birthday.
Thank you for all your loving and well wishes.
I'm so thankful.

I'm so blessed.

Let the Celebrations begin!

Fun memories from four years ago!
I edited the number on the photo to make my age current..
it is okay to edit selfies...
right?

The snow has fallen ....
like it sometimes does on February 23 and Canada has won Gold this morning...
and I'm blessed beyond measure.

A question about Paska

Do you get entertaining text messages from your family?

Sometimes...
the texts I get are worth sharing.
They make me smile and are usually somehow quite persuasive.
I've decided that the premium texts will now be shared with all of you.

This particular one came last night.
I've removed names to protect their privacy. =)

I made Paska today.
It has been cooled...
and bagged...
and right after work...
carted off.

elephants

While we were doing the repaint...
I had several of the cabinets empty so they could be moved easier.
It was great to spring clean at the same time and  now know where our belongings are for the most part.

During one visit ...
he pointed to the cupboard and said...
"elephants".
I had no idea.
I was properly stumped.

He was insistent.
Elephants were in the cupboard and I was supposed to retrieve them.
I picked him up and showed him the empty cupboard.
If a little one can be stumped...
he was.

How could this cupboard that held so many wonderfully tempting items kept out of reach be suddenly completely empty?

I looked at him and said...
I know!
Shocking isn't it?

He accepted the plain truth that the elephants were gone.

Several days later while I put the belongings back in the cupboards my eyes rested on this View Master Picture Reel.

Of course...
Elephants!

You can just imagine his relief when I told him I found the elephants!

The View Master is a coveted toy at our house.

My Mom's handwriting and now the story of the elephants...
it makes me smile...
every time.

I do hope you have some precious moment in your Valentine Day dear ones.

Painting

We tried to remember when we had last painted the main living area in our bungalow and we couldn't remember exactly when it was ...
but it was after our kids got married but before grands began to arrive.
Next time we wonder... this change will be documented.

For the first time ever...
I had a colour consultant come to the house and help us decide what would and would not work.
We chose Buttermilk.

Our house faces North and South and on a sunny day...
there is adequate light but on a cloudy day I find myself with lights on and wanted the space to be bright... light and airy.

Yellow has always been my favourite colour.
I wear it often and chose it for my bridesmaid's dresses and have painted rooms yellow over our 35 years...
 a few times.

The kitchen didn't change except the tea cup racks were painted white and moved from either side of the living room window to the cabinets on either side of the kitchen sink.
I've had people walk into my house that only know me from blogging and have been turned around in their directions....
so let me help you.
The kitchen window faces south.

The dining room is south and west and we come in from the garage through that far door.

Beautiful flowers... still lovely from the Mom's Group that Anneliese and I shared our bread making techniques with.

Pictures have been updated again.
I have a stack of prints from past changes.
These tea cups were the two cups I remember first of my Mom's collection.

The jelly cupboard was rescued from the garage of my beloved's grandparents.
It hasn't been touched except to clean.
We are considering a bit of a white wash...
to add to the many layers of paint it already has.

The "big cupboard" was built by my grandpa for my parents when they got married in 1942.
The date is still written inside.
It was their closet...desk..kitchen cabinet and dresser drawer.
It reminds me we have too many belongings these days.

We have no basement in this bungalow.
The grands ask me once in awhile if we do...
as though they think we are holding some surprise for them.

I have wanted curtains for that window since we last painted....
and now.. we both agree that it was a good idea.

The front door no one ever uses.

Going into the laundry area and "master bath".
I say this because it is his.
Mine will be painted next.
Both dining room and laundry room walls are Buttermilk but you can see how the lighting changes the colour.

I really should have waited for this reveal until the new towels were bought.
But.. maybe you can pretend.
When given multiple choices...
he chose Jester for the paint colour.

When we moved to the farm twenty years ago..
I was given this picture from the office I worked at.

The picture was given to us from my brother and sister in law for a wedding gift.
It has always found a perfect spot in every house...
and I expect it always will.

The bench...
was rescued from the barn when we bought the farm.

The laundry room floor needed to be redone.
The floor had too much flex for the tile and the grout was slowly being sucked up by the vacuum.
This is vinyl tile with grout.
A breeze to put in ...
he said.

My laundry room.

So...
there you have it.
When we update the paint in the bedroom...
and my bathroom...
I'll let you know.

all for now..

Family Day Sleepover

Yesterday would have been my Mom's 92nd birthday ...
so we invited the best party goers we know over to celebrate with us.

What good is birthday cake if you can't blow out candles?
They all took their turns...
a few times.

The grandma they have never met...
had her photo on the mantle where they could see her.

They thought it would be fun to blow them out...
as a group.

Grandpa...
has a lot of candle lighting patience.

I showed them how she always cut birthday cakes.

And then....
it was movie time and time to relax!

Today is Family Day here in British Columbia.

They'll be heading home  this morning for their family holiday!

all for now...
with love,

such amazing love

Last weekend we had the most amazing stretch of January weather.
It was easy to believe that Spring had arrived.
The sun on the face felt gloriously warm as we sat outside each afternoon to sip hot coffee.

Thank you for praying for those mending up in our family.
Each day is better than the last and we continue to pray for complete healing.
The love and support has been an incredible encouragement.

This weekend...

we saw "our" Seahawks win...
which was apparently a big surprise.

I busied myself in the kitchen testing new appetizers ...
and found myself caught up in the game and think I might like football.

I felt sorry for Peyton Manning and the Bronco's...
such a big unexpected loss.

And then...
there was word that a dear blogging friend Kristen is nearing the end of her battle with cancer.
If you have not ever read her blog and her journey ....

I wanted to read the post out loud to my beloved.
I couldn't.
I see in Kristen such love.
She loves her family more than she loves herself.
She loves God more than anything.

What a legacy!

Please join me in praying for that which I know Kristen has been praying for.
