Hafer-Flocken

We had just finished our toast and yogurt when the sweetest sight arrived at our door.
Having just dropped off big brother at kindergarten, they came with their own lunch kits complete with the breakfast they didn't have time to finish at home.

They love their Hafer-Flocken and no one makes it as good as their mommy.
I know this...because I've made it cooked with milk...
as she does...
and it seems...it isn't the same.

I asked her to show "how to eat Hafer-Floken"...
and she did.
They should put her in a grocery store to do a Quaker Oats demonstration...
don't you think?

Have you had your oatmeal (Hafer-Floken) today?

all caught up

Well...
I'm all caught up on Downton Abbey.
Technically...I missed one episode where the girl was left at the altar.
Our PVR failed us...
so if you can, do tell me what I had missed.
Last evening we watched with the rest of you as the lives of the family and staff changed forever.

Now...I also can warn others about spoiler alerts..
though..I'll be careful to keep the details under my hat.

Pizza Class

Three of our guys came to lend us support at the cooking class last night.
I handed the camera off to him and he kept a close eye on the class.

We always say when we leave..
the class was great wasn't it?
We mean the ladies that came.

We got there early..
got our groceries..
and started the prep.

We love working together!

Kathy and I did the teaching this time around.
I think she could have been a home-ec teacher...
so smooth she is.
Judy and Anneliese were our helpers...
and they are the best!
Wow..  what an amazing team I have.
I'm so blessed.

The last thing we demonstrated was Kathy's  chocolate chiffon cake we made in class.

They thought...
it turned out.

My challenge to them was to make a chocolate chiffon cake for Valentines day.

I think they might.
Thanks for joining us!

making pizzas with my friend

Tonight is Mennonite Girls Can Cook pizza class at Lepp Farm Market.
There are still some seats available.
You know the proceeds all go to charity...
right?
We'd love you to come.

Back in October..
Kathy came over for the day and we spent a day together mixing, rolling, cutting...
and taking photos for the book.

I found beauty in the photographer...
her smile...
her energy...
her stick-to-it-iveness...
when I was all pizza'd out.

We got some amazing photos for the book  (not these blurry ones)...
and we remembered again...
how much friendship can include.

Tonight...
you can witness a repeat of the day...
her and I..
teaching...
laughing...
telling stories...

and serving you up some pretty fantastic pizza, salad...
and chiffon cake for dessert.

River walking with friends

Yesterday we took the freeway east to Chilliwack.
The day was beautiful and since rain is forecasted again this week we needed to soak up our fair share of Vitamin D.

We met Scot and Kathy at the bridge...
and headed back west along the river.

The guys kept their eyes on the river banks...
watching the fishermen....
while us girls chatted along the way.

It was the best surprise to find another girl..
and we visited with Elmer and Judy for awhile on the path.

Kathy invited us all over for supper...
and the perfect afternoon turned into the perfect evening!

Grilled burgers..
onion rings..
and orange chiffon cake!

I think I love spending winter at home...
after all.

setting up a dentist shop

The other day there was a serious business going on over here.
When you are three...as she often tells me she is...
you know a bit about some things.

The hallway was a busy traffic area...
for mommies and babies.

Mid morning Kanneloni Macaroni advised Little Miss Muffet that they were going to play dentist.
White gloves were pulled out of the dress up clothes and I was instructed to lay myself on the pillows that were carefully arranged for my comfort.

The assistant was given instructions and I sort of figured out that it was her job to keep the patient  occupied with chatter.
It was a good thing I was occupied too since the dentist hadn't seen a lot of videos yet on "tender care".
As you can see...the patient seemed tense.  =)

When Grandpa finished chores and came into the house...
he was quickly dragged into the dentist chair...
and I was excused to see to the noodles.

He is smarter than me.
It was not long before the tables were turned and the patient became the dentist.

There was a lot of giggling going on in the dentist chair...
after that.

cooking class...circa 1977

The years that we dated were good.
We spent so much time with my parents and I know they enjoyed it...
probably more than we did.  =)

To keep our evenings interesting we would occasionally bake and I found this photo recently and it surprised me that we actually had documentation of one of my very early cooking classes.

I guess I somehow thought it was important that he learned to cream butter and sugar the old fashioned way.  The mixmaster on the counter apparently off limits or maybe I liked the idea of cookie making taking as long as possible.

Not everything about this photo is part of my past...
some of it including the student is part of my present.
I also still have the green pyrex mixing bowl and the blue tea pot.

What I noticed about this picture was the dried arrangement on top of the refrigerator.
My mom kept that for years and I can still recall the scent of Eucalyptus.
It became part of our household when my Dad broke his back when his leg was trapped on the back of a dump truck.  He was given that "manly" arrangement when he was in the hospital and somehow because it was dried when it arrived...
it never died and thus was never sent away.

My mother was not a hoarder...
she just had less to clutter the home.

I don't recall her ever needing to de-clutter the house like I do once a year.
I should wonder about that some.

All this thinking...
from one photo from long ago.

OH...and speaking of cooking classes..
we are cooking up three delicious pizza's, winter salad and chiffon cake at Lepp's
on Thursday January 24th.
The proceeds will all go to Matthew's House...
please come.

stuffy monkey

Most times...
when a gift is given...
and not exactly appreciated in it's arrived form...
the recipient waits until the gift giver is gone before doing some minor changes so that it fits just right into the home.

Yesterday we had family lunch and Lil' Farm Hand, Kanneloni Macaroni and Little Oh...
brought Kobe  a present.

We enjoyed our lunch...and noticed that Kobe was giving Stuffy Monkey a going over.

It was entertainment all around.
Last evening...
she was tearing around the farm with her Stuffy Monkey in her mouth...
quite happy she had won the round.
Stuffy Monkey on the other hand was feeling rather deflated.

Downton Abby...continued

I know you are wondering if season two is behind me.
It's not.
We haven't even put the DVD's in the slot yet as the evenings have been with other things that were prebooked.

What always amazes me is how once you know about something it seems like it is there..
around every corner.
That happened to me yesterday afternoon at 4 pm when I was in the kitchen.
Katie announced her next guests were the cast from Downton Abbey.

Oh dear.
What to do?
I wondered if I watched it if it would be the equivalent of watching all the trailers from season two.

They came on stage then..
and I just wanted to see them.

They didn't spoil much for me but I have realized that the version of season one I watched on netflix missed some pretty important spots.

I'm guessing the episodes should have been longer than 47 minutes each?
Did you for instance see exactly what happened with a certain someone from an embassy being carted away in secret?

They didn't show me that and now I'm thinking I've been short-episoded.

Well..
Natalie dropped me off the full season two so I'm guessing I'll get caught up...
properly.

Anyways...
thanks for all the great suggestions for more programming like this.
I mentioned it to my beloved...
and I chose to take his look of disbelief was because he too....
was wondering how we never knew.

Downton Abbey...delivered

Do you all watch Downton Abbey?
At first when I heard the title of the show I couldn't help but think of my hometown but then quickly dismissed it.

Last year...I heard about it again and I was wishing I had watched the previous season as now I had friends who were into it...
and I was out of the loop.

This year right after Christmas the hoopla started in again on Facebook and I felt completely undone.
What was this amazing show that had all my girlfriends in a dither...
setting their PVR's and warning against watching the trailers...
which apparently would ruin the shock and disbelief of the goings on in Downton.

This prompted me to check to see if I could find it all on Netflix.
I thought to myself..
now there is something that could coax me onto the treadmill.
I found season one and when my beloved came in for lunch...
announced the good news.

He of course...
didn't share my enthusiasm but as the day wore on...
and he came in again for coffee mid afternoon..
it was loaded up and ready to go.

When he came in for supper...
dinner was ready and I had a lovely dinner ready to serve in the back room...
complete with dinner entertainment.

We watched the first episode over dinner...
and the second episode over dessert...
and then just kept going.

We finished up season one at 11 pm.
I searched this morning for season two..
and sadly realized it wasn't available yet on Netflix.

I went back to my Facebook friends and casually mentioned that I was going to be undone.

And then...
Natalie..my niece sent me a hasty message telling me not to worry one speck..
she had season two in her DVD library and would get it to me ...
asap.

This dear Natalie ...
kids not.

Mid afternoon she arrived...
season two in hand...
and now..
I'm set.

She said as she left.
"don't watch it all in one night".

ok.

I love Natalie.

New Years Verse

We took out our tree yesterday.
It was so beautiful and sparkly in the house with it...
and now..I long for a bright light to replace what was.
My focus needs a re-shifting now that the book has gone to design.

Each year I choose a verse for the year.
This year I have chosen Psalm 103:1.

If I could just remember to praise God in my attitudes...
in my disappointments....when I am worried as well as when everything is going swell...
my life would be transformed.

He sees me inside and out
and yet in spite of that...in  his graciousness...
I live to breath again today.

Bless his holy name!

What is your verse going to be this year?

New Years Day 2012

After lunch yesterday we took our deep fryer and our Portzelky batter and went to the shop to fry up enough New Years Fritters for my siblings and their families.

They arrived...
and claimed their vehicles...
to ride on...

...and to send down the rails.

Some continued their naps...

and others just wanted to sit with their Grandpa Bob yet for awhile.

Some arrived like a ray of sunshine.

Uncle Bob's Chicken Corn Chowder was loved by the youngest...
to the oldest.

It was very fun to watch these little second-cousins who are so close to the same age.
They are now starting to get to know each other...
and the shyness quickly disappears.

This is my niece Tammy.

It was not hard to get photos of smiles.
There were plenty of those.

The overflow table =)
You were specially invited to sit there.

And from one end to the other.
We missed Gerry and Heidi's family who either had the flu or  live far away.
Next year...I hope to need another table...
or two.

The first tradition of the year..
is cleaned up!

all for now...
with love,
