Little farmers

We passed this semi truck trailer on the freeway and from the back seat I heard a discussion about the contents in the trailer.  After some debate...it was decided....  cows were in the trailer.  Of course!
Country kids know where their chocolate milk really comes from.

the busyness and beauty of summer

It's been a busy week.
Early in the week we invited our Calgary cousins and Aunties to a few good old Mennonite treats.

Auntie Hilda was very happy to show off her sweet grandson.

Then...
midweek we were very excited to see our friends from Virginia come on the farm yard.
Anneliese who first had the connection with Artful Accents was quick to arrive right after them and like the first time when we met Kathy...
there was heartfelt emotion.

Blogging friends are real friends.
I realized it again as we shared around appetizers in our backyard and then later as we sat around the table in Anneliese and her H's back yard.

The summer has been beautifully rich with reconnections from near and far.

In the next wee while...
I'll be enjoying the other part of summer that we all need from time to time.

all for now...

Strawberry Shortcake

Turning three is lots of fun!
I had heard from a reliable source with a little girl voice with a good amount of conviction...
that she was having a strawberry shortcake party.

She had no idea what that was really.
For weeks preceding the party she would nod her head and smile and say...
"strawberry shortcake"...
to which I would reply...
"really?....are you turning two?"
She would laugh and say...."three".

And so ....
she ate her strawberry dessert...
wore her strawberry shirt...

and opened up her strawberry presents.

There was lots of smiles and excited cousins and very yummy food.

Oh...that every child in the world would have at least one day in their life that would cause them to smile like Kanneloni Macaroni  smiles so often.

Little Oh's 1st Birthday Party

When you are one year old...
your mommy is the best party planner in the world.

When you are one year old and your mommy is a photographer...
she will have almost every day of your life documented in photos.
(if your grammie is a blogger....she'll take care of the rest of the documenting of your life)

When you are one year old and your birthday is the middle of July..
you plan to eat ice cream...wear a tie...and enjoy bare legs.

When you are one year old the rule to not climb on the table is set aside for one day.

When you are one year old ...
it is hard to not have hurt feelings when your Daddy won't let you touch the flame.

When you are one year old...
you can hold your ice cream bar...
how ever you like....
even when it is very cold.

When you are one year old...
other people will clean up your drips.

When you are one year old...
it is good and encouraged to do a birthday dance on the table when people sing.

When you are one year old...
your Grammie will give you a bath...
put a baby sleeper on you..
and put your hair in a baby curl...
and say... "you're our baby".

all for now....

the b day boys

They don't make B-Day Boy shirts in every size...
so...
I improvised.

There was plenty of rough housing.

Lots of running.

Some pint sized soccer.

It was amazing how fast this one year old and this Grandpa could move.

Happy Birthday Baby Oh...
and my beloved!

You are  both more dear to me everyday.

Summer shots

I had my little point and shoot outside and the lil' farm hand grabbed it to take some photos of us after I had taken a few shots.
We were laying on the blanket in the back yard enjoying the warmth of the sunshine and the shade as it is not yet a novelty to us this summer.

It's possible he has his Mommy's eye for photography.

As I lay on my back looking at the wispy clouds I watched an eagle soaring high above and pointed it out.
He found it.

And....
then we enjoyed some summer freezies.

I love summer time!

a full table

We often think that our bungalow is bursting at the seams when the family comes home and on occasion I wonder how my parents felt when we all came home with our little ones.

On this particular visit it looks like we were having a special meal together since I see her Royal Albert china on the table.  It looks like the whole family was not home for this occasion but I remember when we were all home that another table was stuck on the end and we made it work.

I don't remember it ever being a problem.
I don't even remember my parents complaining about bursting at the seams.
I do remember lots of laughter and kids running under foot while the adults sat around chatting...setting tables....clearing tables...washing dishes  (by hand) and all the conversations that those simple chores allowed.

The door was always open....and food was always found.

It's good to remember what I remember about what was important...
then and now.

all for now...

Miss Muffet turns two

We were invited to come join our little Miss Muffet at her birthday celebration.
She greeted us with pigtails as though she always allows decorations in her hair.
I made mention of her hair-do and her little fingers gave those elastics a tug and I made great efforts to undo my needless mention.

Her cake was quite Dora-delightful and I smiled when she looked at everyone else to see if we were all properly impressed.

She reached for a red rosebud so I slipped the cake a tad closer so she could swipe...
her sweet "germ-free" finger through the butter sweet goodness.

Her favorite gift was quickly held close to comfort.

Daddy assisted in unpacking those pesky packages that keep children and toys separated.

She thinks she is one of the big kids now.
We allowed her that for her day.
She will remain our sweet cuddly little Muffet for a long time yet.
I don't think she'll mind that much.

all for now...

the summit 2012

Sometimes the behind the scenes photos are more interesting than the actual photo.
Yesterday we had our much anticipated day together.

This time we settled in at John and Marg's for a beautiful relaxing evening.

These two keep showing up at our parties...
always late...
and always funny.

Since some of the people from MennoMedia are attending a conference in Richmond for the rest of the week ...
it seemed like the perfect time to plan a time together.

It was the first time meeting Amy (standing below me).
She walked us through the creation of the book.
We have shared countless emails and phone conversations and from the time she arrived on the yard...
it was joy to share real time together.

Russ (and his wife Jane) also from MennoMedia shared dinner with us and we were blessed by their presence and their encouragement.

We sang together...
prayed together...
ate together...

and at the end of the evening we stood shoulder to shoulder in a circle while Amy prayed for us all.

This morning we are going to enjoy breakfast together...
some will continue on their vacation...
some will carry on to their conference...
and the rest of us will continue to enjoy the summer of 2012.

It was a very good day.
Life yesterday...really was like a bowl of cherries.
